An Evening With John Hodgman, a triple whammy on my budget, etc.

So last night I saw John Hodgman at the Miami Book Fair! He's definitely one celebrity who is exactly as he appears on TV. He actually didn't appear by himself but with Larry Wilmore, another contributor to The Daily Show, as well as a writer and sometimes actor on The Office. He was promoting his book I'd Rather We Got Casinos and Other Black Thoughts which sounds really funny and I must read eventually. Although they'd never appeared together before, Hodgman and Wilmore played off of each other as well as any comedy duo. Some highlights:

- Hodgman beginning by saying that when he arrived in Miami he was feeling a bit under the weather, then muttering under his breath, "Swine flu."

- Hodgman using an audio cd of his book as a coaster for his water bottle

- Wilmore reading a blurb from the jacket of his book by Chris Rock in a dead-on impersonation of Chris Rock's voice

- Hodgman relating the story of how he got permission to use the photo of the founder of the Church of Satan in his book, prompting Wilmore to remark that he thought satan was the founder. This in turn led to Hodgman explaining how the purpose of the Church of Satan wasn't so much to worship satan as to "annoy Christians." From then on Wilmore kept teasing him about secretly being a member.

- Wilmore talking about his days as a writer for In Living Color and writing with Jim Carrey until 1am. He happened to be present at the "birth" of Fire Marshal Bill, which he said will be written on his tombstone.

- An audience member asking both of them what they thought about people who got most of their news from The Daily Show, to which Hodgman responded something to the effect that he didn't see any problem with it since a lot of people get their news from opinion shows (obviously referring to Limbaugh, Hannity, et. al), earning applause from the audience. He also noted that John Stewart takes his interviews seriously because he is a genuinely curious person.

- Of course, getting to meet Hodgman at the signing after the talk, having him sign my Venue Songs dvd which amused him (yes, I was the only one), and telling him to tell Jonathan Coulton to do a show in Miami (he seemed surprised that he hadn't yet).

So all in all a very entertaining evening :) I really wanted to buy a lot of books there, but I'm going to really have to start seriously saving every penny I can because it looks like I will have to pay that $1,800 in taxes from 2007 (turns out it's because I took money out of an old retirement account, and had no idea how high the taxes are on that), plus I'll be paying half the cost of my hearing aids (my share is about $2,400). On top of that, I'll be taking what amounts to a pay cut for a yet-to-be-determined amount. Looks like I'll be in the hole for awhile, which pretty much kills the chances of a new computer or Halloween Horror Nights next year :(

Well, I'd better shower and get back to my NaNoWriMo novel, I'm about 2K behind, eeek!

Love,

"Kay"

    <lj:music>"The Wire"</lj:music>

Today I got a lovely letter from the IRS basically saying that there was some kind of mistake on my 2007 tax form and that I owe them $1,827. After freaking out, I checked out the form and saw that what had happened was that they were counting the $4,000 I had gotten from closing out a retirement fund for a job I no longer worked at. At the time I got it I had the taxes taken out in advance, or so I thought. So it looks like I very well may have to pay it, on top of hearing aid payments and what amounts to an impending pay cut at work, yay. So next year is going to be tight for sure. And I'm pretty sure I'll need a new computer soon, too *sigh*

In brighter news, I will be seeing John Hodgman at the Miami Book Fair this weekend, so that should be fun. And my NaNoWriMo novel is chugging along pretty well, and I should be able to stay on par tonight. It's a pretty disjointed mess, but that's almost to be expected at this stage. They say the second week is the toughest and that it will get easier...I hope they're right!

In closing, thank God tomorrow's Friday...hope everyone has a good weekend!

Love,

"Kay"

Halloween, hearing aids, NaNo, etc.

Halloween this year was probably the most fun one I'd had in awhile (not counting Halloween Horror Nights last year which I didn't go to on Halloween anyway). Thursday I was feeling a bit stressed about getting my costume together and hungry to boot, so when my friend/boss at FIU gave me a coupon for a $1 chicken dinner at Boston Market, I thought it would be a perfect stop for dinner. Apparently about half of Miami had the same idea because the place was packed with people waving those coupons around. They even ran out of chicken, so I ended up getting the turkey which wasn't bad. Then it was off to the party supply store for some makeup. On the sidewalk adjoining the parking lot for the store there was a guy in a grim reaper costume with a giant skeleton head. I happened to be listening to Here Comes Science at the time and turned up "I Am a Paleontologist" full blast and the dude started jammin to it'! It was great. The store, however, was almost as busy as Boston Market, but I did manage to score a makeup kit.

Friday I had to go down to vocational rehab to find out how much they'll give me for new and much better hearing aids, which turns out to be about half. So I'll have to come up with about $2,500,which I applied for a loan from my credit union for. Friday was also the party held by my apartment building management every year, and I was determined to at least have a shot at winning a prize. And sure enough I won "Spookiest Costume" and $500 off my rent! That was pretty sweet (and will help out towards paying for the hearing aids). The next night, my pals came over, and after a really good seafood dinner we headed out to South Beach for the Halloween street party going on. The traffic was really bad, but it was fun looking at all the costumes. I saw not one but two Rorschachs!

So now I have begun the insane challenge of writing a 50,000 word novel by the end of November. I'm not thrilled with it so far but I think it has potential. I should be on par with my word count by the end of the evening...I'd better get to the gym so I can get to it!

Love,

"Kay"

    <lj:music>"Fingertips" in my head (hehe)</lj:music>

Oh man, I just woke up from a freakin' cool dream (and i usually don't even remember them)! I was at Halloween Horror Nights going through one of the houses (I remember Freddie Krueger grabbing for me as I went in and the person behind me holding onto my hand for dear life, among a few other things). That was pretty cool in itself because I'd been feeling bummed about not going this year. After I was out of the house and back in the line area, I noticed some posters for a TMBG show. I was reading the comments written on them (typical message board stuff, some praising, some snarky), when I saw Flans signing stuff and conducting some business with a park official. When he seemed to have a free moment, I went up to him, pointed to the house and said, "Great house, have you been through it yet?" He looked at me curiously and said, "No, want to?" "Again?" I said surprised. then, "Sure!" and before I knew it, he grabbed my hand and took off! So I basically got to to through a Halloween Horror Nights house twice, the second time with a death grip on John Flansburgh's hand.

I repeat: Best. Dream. Ever.

Love,

"Kay"

    <lj:music>My fan</lj:music>

My dad and I were supposed to see Capitalism, a Love Story today, but since he wasn't up to it, I worked some on my sketch for "The Bells are Ringing." It has a girl running with two long alien-like arms pulling the earplugs out of her ears and lots of bells of different sizes in the background. Not bad, but missing something. I was thinking of the line captured in that scene..."Ten thousand eyes are staring/They pull away her earplugs" and it hit me...give each bell an eye! I love it when a simple yet perfect idea clicks like that.

I was also watching the video for "Fake Believe Type B" (the one with the band performing) on my HD tv for the first time and noticed that Linnell very obviously has something in his ears that look very much like my hearing aids. I didn't think they could be earplugs since those don't typically loop behind the ear like modern hearing aids do, but I've been informed by a monkey knowledgeable in these matters that there are earplugs designed like that to give some feedback, so that's probably what they are. Speaking of real hearing aids, though, I finally finished all of the appointments required by vocational rehab to find out if I qualify for any financial assistance for new ones, and I got a letter last week saying I was in category 1 which is "Individuals who are most significantly disabled. These must be served first." While I'm not so sure my hearing loss is that significant, it's good to know I'm near the top of the list. Of course that doesn't tell me if I'll get full funding or just a percentage, but I'm hopeful!

And finally, the other morning I woke up, cleaned out the cat's litter box and took it to the trash chute as usual, only to see a mannequin head perched in the chute's hatch door, staring at me. A bit freaky to see first thing in the morning :p It even had a name ("Nell") scrawled in black marker on the neck. Now people have left stuff sitting on the hatch door many times before (because, you know, the extra effort to actually throw it down the chute is just too much!) but this just seemed obviously planted. I just wish I'd thought to take a picture of it :p

And that's about it, ladies and gents. Hope everyone has a good week!

Love,

"Kay"

My dad's been suffering from pretty severe chest pains for awhile now, but the doctors can't seem to find anything wrong. Yesterday it got so bad that he left work and went home to have my brother Tim drive him to the hospital, but Tim's back went out so my dad had to drive himself and needed to ask a stranger for help just to get from the car to the emergency room entrance. He's scheduled for some kind of surgery today where they insert a probe to check the blood vessels for any problems/blockages so hopefully they'll find the problem.
Apparently some parents are objecting to letting their kids watch Obama's speech to schoolkids scheduled for next week during lunchtime because they see it as "indoctrination," which I thought was silly enough (he's going to talk to kids about the importance of working hard and staying in school, that socialist bastard!!), then I read this in my local paper this morning:

::Davie parent Stephen Dambra said he was concerned because he doesn't know what the president plans to say. He would like schools to record the speech and screen it before deciding if it's appropriate for students.

``If you were watching the Super Bowl halftime awhile back, you saw it,'' he said, referring to Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction. ``You'll never forget it and you can't take it back.

``If there's something that's said that's inappropriate, then like I said, it can never be taken back,'' Dambra said.::

Um, did he just compare an Obama speech to "Nipplegate"??
Had my psych test last week, which consisted of the predictable questions about my childhood, some puzzles and picture matching, repeating numbers backwards and from lowest to highest (NOT fun), and some general knowledge questions. I was a bit disappointed that there was no Rorschach test, hehe. Anyway, it must have been fairly obvious that I was an English major as the following sampling of questions (not in order) shows:

Therapist: Who wrote Hamlet?
Me: William Shakespeare
Therapist: Who created Sherlock Holmes?
Me: Arthur Conan Doyle
Therapist: Who wrote Alice in Wonderland?
Me: Lewis Carroll
Therapist: How long does it take sunlight to reach the earth?
Me: ...

This weekend I went with my brother to visit my mom and go to Sanibel Island beach. We had a great time snorkeling...Tim and I both found beautiful conch shells with the conch still in them, so we couldn't keep them. I found some hermit crabs, too, which was pretty neat. All in all a great, relaxing end of summer fling.

So today was the first day of school, and it went very well! Even though I was there until almost 5, the day went by fast. One of the articles I read with my class was about teens becoming more involved in community service, and the author quoted "The Greatest Love of All" by Whitney Houston. I asked if any of them knew who she was and none did! Man that made me feel old :p

Now I've finished my lesson plans for tomorrow (which includes relating a Beatles song to the Outsiders!), and I'm exhausted but happy the first day went so well...now to just make it through the next ten months :)

Love,

"Kay"

Today I went to the local vocational rehabilitation office to find out if I qualify for any financial assistance for better hearing aids (which most people from friends to family to coworkers agree I need). It appear that I *might* qualify for partial funding, but I need a few more tests first. I have a recent hearing test, but I was told I also need an eye test and...a psychiatric evaluation. The reason given for needed the vision test was that people with hearing loss need to take extra care of their eyesight (which seemed to be stretching it a bit, but fine, I needed a vision test anyway). As for the psych exam, the rationale there is that "people with hearing loss often develop anxiety." Now I have mentioned before that it can be frustrating, but does it make me anxious? I don't know. When I told my brother Tim, he said, "Yeah, you're pretty antsy sometimes." I knew that, too, but didn't think it had anything at all to do with my hearing. What's interesting is that the lady I talked to made it sound like anxiety would actually improve my chances of getting financial assistance, but I usually do my best to keep it at bay when I go to a doctor or technician for any test or procedure. Would that work against me in this case? Guess I'll find out...

Off to FIU. Hopefully I can do something fun later in the week, but funds are kinda low until I get paid next week.
Tomorrow is my brother's last day of probation, and we're all really proud of him, but we all got a bad scare today. Tim's had some serious back issues since the car accident that have made it impossible for him to work for the time being. He has a form he has to fill out with jobs he's applied to, but he has two separate doctor's notes (which his probation officer knows about) stating that he can't work for now. So today he calls her to verify that he'll be let out of the program tomorrow and she tells him, "Well, you haven't brought in your job form," and when he reminded her about the dr. notes she said that didn't matter. He was terrified and went to my dad's work nearly in tears asking him for help. My dad left work early (sacrificing much needed overtime pay) to go to the probation office to try to straighten things out. He was told the officer could not see him today, but he stood his ground and waited to speak to her supervisor (although the officer had told Tim not to "bother" the supervisor, hmm, wonder why?). The supervisor didn't understand why Tim would be violated, so she went to check with the officer herself. When she came back, she told my dad that the officer said Tim should have known that she was "kidding." Ha. ha. Why would Tim think she was kidding about that? She's been giving him a hard time since he got out, which isn't a bad thing, but this last minute scare was totally unnecessary. As a result of her "joke," Tim is still shaken up and my dad has a terrible headache. At least I know they'll both feel better tomorrow now that it's over with, but that doesn't make it right.

Rant over.
Last year's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Orlando was seriously the most fun I've ever had at a theme park, so I am sorely tempted to go again this year. However, after careful consideration, I've decided I probably won't go this year in lieu of saving up for a longer trip to the park next year. There are a couple of good reasons for doing so:

1. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of HHN, so they'll probably plan something really big (or at least bigger than usual).

2. By next year the new Harry Potter section of Islands of Adventure will be open, and of course I will have to go to that, so I can plan to do both HP and HHN around the same time.

If any of you are anywhere near Orlando and have ever considered going to HHN, by all means do so, especially if you are at all a fan of haunted houses, horror, and amazing makeup and sets. And if you do decide to go next year, let me know, maybe we can plan a meetup :)

back to my lazy Saturday...

Love,

"Kay"

    <lj:music>Jerry Reed - "East Bound and Down"</lj:music>

I recently took my “4 of 2” book to Office Max for scanning, and since I’m still not terribly adept at working with image files, I have a couple of issues/questions:

1.The whole book is saved as a series of pictures in a single file in adobe format, which is great for scrolling through the book, but doesn’t allow me to post any of it in livejournal or facebook (as far as I can tell). I will hopefully have my own website someday for my work, but for now I’d like to post it (or at least parts of it) for my friends to see (the ones who haven’t already, hehe). I’m assuming this will involve saving it in .mpg or .jpg format, but I have no clue how to do so…any ideas?

2.To add the typed lyrics to the book where I wanted them, I used the very primitive method of gluing them onto the pictures – with rubber cement. Of course this was extremely foolish since over time the rubber cement darkened and is now very visible in spots, so dark in some places that it makes the text impossible to read. I need to find a way to clean up these areas on the images and replace them with clean type, which should be pretty easy in a file, but again I have no idea how.

Any advice on either of these things would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

Love,

“Kay”

    <lj:music>Jonathan Coulton - "I Feel Fantastic"</lj:music>

I was just reading back entries of my LJ and realized how much I've slacked in updating in the past couple of years. I really do need to work harder at updating more because not only is it fun to look back at what was going on in years past, but it can be useful for retrieving information that may have been forgotten (cat's birthdays for example). I realize that Facebook is currently way more popular (and admittedly easier for sharing pics), but it's not that great for blogging. Myspace is a bit better for blogging (especially for longer stuff like my book excerpts) and sharing music, but it's still not as good as something like Livejournal that is specifically designed for it. I'll probably continue to use the other services, too although I've been using Myspace less since I've started using Facebook), but I'm sticking with LJ for most of my blogging needs (blogosphere heaves a sigh of relief). Still don't think I'll ever use Twitter, though, I could never keep up with that! For those of you who use mutliple sites, what do you like best about them and what do you mostly use them for?

Summer school is wrapping up at my school, and once again I'm very relieved to have been signed on for another year. Enrollment is still down thanks to the economy which has hit the economically depressed area the school is in especially hard, and every year I'm sure is the one the principal is going to tell me they just can't afford to keep me on full time, but they always do. Since it's such a struggle for parents to afford to send their kids to a Catholic school, I'm even more motivated to do all I can for these kids, and every year I get a little better at it (I hope!).

Stuff I'm looking forward to this summer:

Mom's visit
Bruno
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Venetian Pool
Beach days
Snorkling
(Hopefully)new bed shopping at IKEA

Beyond that, I'm trying to decide when to use my free ticket for Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure. It's good for up to 7 consecutive days, and while there's no way I could use all seven (for one thing, I couldn't afford that long of a hotel stay), I'm sure I could manage at least 3 days. I'm dying to try out the new Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster that will be opening any time now, and I am off all next month, but July is just tooo hot to be walking around theme parks. I'm toying with the idea of going to Halloween Horror Nights again this year. I'd have to pay separately for HHN of course (about $60 for admission and another $60 for a much needed express pass), but it would be cooler in October. They just announced some of the themes for this year's HHN houses - so far there will be a Wolfman house (to promote the new movie no doubt), a Saw house, and a Chucky (Child's Play) house. Doesn't sound quite as cool as last year's all-original house themes, but still could be a lot of fun.

Ok, enough boring rambling - my mp3 player should be fully charged by now, so I'm off to run. Have a great day/weekend everyone!

Love,

"Kay"

<lj:music>Magnetic Fields - The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side</lj:music>

(aka too much Red Bull)

I just don't get racism and prejudice. I can't wrap my brain around it. Is it that much of a mental stretch to see that every single group of people on earth has both good people and jerks, idiots and geniuses? It just seems so obvious to me that you can't overgeneralize about an entire race, religion, etc. Maybe I just need to stop reading the junk people spew on public forums *sigh*

Obama critics love to say stuff like, "Government created jobs won't stimulate the economy." I never really understood the logic behind this. Don't government jobs pay real money? And won't a lot of that money be spent on restaurants, electronics, cars, etc., just like private sector job money? Either way the economy gets stimulated. ALso, our infrastructure, once the envy of the world, is beginning to fall apart and that's just not something we can depend on private industry to take care of. It took us a long time to get into this mess (and I know that both Republicans and Democrats are to blame), and it's gonna take awhile to get out of it. Just seems like another no brainer to me.

Someone's been skinning and gutting cats in a couple of neighborhoods about 25 miles south of me. Sick bastards, I really hope they're caught soon.

In happier news, my brother is still keeping out of trouble, yay! He's actually working two jobs now and helping my dad with the rent. It's like invasion of the brother snatchers (but in a good way)!

Ok, I need to get ready for work, then a fun day with my gal pals, possibly involving a drive to the beach. Summer has definitely arrived here! Have a great weekend everyone...
Love,

"Kay"

<lj:music>"Power of Love" in my head</lj:music>

In my ongoing quest to find a hearing aid that will help me not feel lost in most social situations, I am trying out a demo of some new ones that, while not quite top of the line, are a good step above what I currently have. In the office of the hearing specialist, I was watching the waiting room tv and Huey Lewis was on talking about how much he likes the ones he wears (the ad even has "Power of Love" and outro music). I'm sure some might feel a bit depressed about Huey Lewis plugging hearing aids, but I thought it was so incredibly dorky it was cute. My favorite part was when he said his are in two different colors so he can tell in the box which is which. Honestly, Huey, it's not that hard, hehe.

Love,

"Kay"

    <lj:music>Pain - "Right On"</lj:music>

My brother's been doing very well, not only working, taking care of my old car, and keeping up with his probation requirements, but he's also addressing some health issues that he's needed taken care of for some time. One thing that surprised me is that he's not even 40 but has arthritis in his back, jeez. I hope he can stay on track...

In other news, the office of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic that I've been volunteering at on Saturdays for about 8 years now is closing :( I'm also bummed because I can't go to the last session (today) since I'm proctoring an SAT exam at my school. But I've been assured that there will be a final party at some point, and I'll be sure to be there!

On a happier note, as some of you may know (and I'm sure I've mentioned before), one of my favorite bands is a smart pop punk band from Mobile, Alabama called Pain; although they're no longer together, they've been working on a DVD retrospective for what seems like forever; I ordered my copy yesterday and I can't wait to get it! I've never had a chance to see them live, they only have a few videos, so the chance to see live footage and other goodies is very exciting. Please check them out at thepainpage.com or their videos for "In a Band," "Square Pegs," and even an animated video for "Jabberjaw" (yes, the theme song from the cartoon about the shark) and see if you like 'em.

Ok, time for my morning run...have a good weekend, all!

Love,

"Kay"

    <lj:music>Mustang Sally (in my head)</lj:music>

Well, I finally found a car, and it is a Mustang once again! What can I say, I love them and they fit me well. This one is a beauty, too...red with tan leather seats. It's a 2008 with just 15,000 miles on it, for just under $16,000. Not bad, eh? Anything newer was just out of my price range. I found it through carmax and it's coming from North Carolina, so it should be here in a week or so. Heh, I just realized my first Stang was white, and my current one is blue, so now I've had red, white, and blue...how's that for patriotic? :)

Love,

"Kay"

Luckily a cop saw everything that happened (it was totally the other guy's fault), but Tim's in way too much pain to deal with police reports or insurance agents, so I don't know how it'll all turn out. He did go to the hospital and got some pain pills, and he has an appointment to see a specialist on Tuesday, but that's not doing him any good right now. <lj:music>The morning news</lj:music>

My mom, dad, brother and I went to a few dealerships as well as Car Max yesterday without much success. We found the exact lovely Mustang I wanted, but it was just too much. My dad and brother did a great job of being the hard-ass negotiators, but the best deal the dealership could offer came to monthly payments of $335 for 72 months...and that's with $5,000 down! Not exactly the bargain I was looking for. Then I test drove a super nice Pontiac hard top convertible, but that was too much, too (keep in mind that we were the only customers on the lot at each of the dealerships). My dad's been wanting me to at least consider a nice low-mileage used Cadillac for some time, so I sat in one at Car Max and it was pretty nice...the fully automatic seats have this killer lower back support, and there are other nice features - it is a caddy after all! My mom kept raving about how comfy and roomy it was, and my dad and brother said they know I'd really love it if I drove it, but I dunno...it's certainly not the sporty, zippy car I had in mind. We couldn't test drive it there, so I will probably be doing that at a dealership some time this week. I guess part of the problem is that I just don't know what I really want. I just want a car I like for about $3000 down and about $250 a month for 5 years, which doesn't seem too unreasonable, especially with car companies supposedly doing so badly, but it seems like it'll be harder and take longer than I thought. Oh well, let's see what this week brings.

Love,

"Kay"

    <lj:music>"Time Warp"</lj:music>

Well, my brother Tim got out of prison last Friday, and he and my mom have been staying here in my apt. since then. She goes back Monday, he goes whenever he finds a place. He already has a job (started today) with some people he worked for before prison, so that's good (take that, bad economy!). And it's nice to have my mom here making meals so I don't have to buy or make them myself :) It's been a bit exhausting though, and I haven't had the mental energy to do any writing, drawing, or reviewing. It's also not always easy managing the use of my car between myself and Tim, but he's been very reliable so far. Speaking of Old Blue (my 'Stang), I'll be giving it to him as soon as I find a new one for myself (we start serious car shopping tomorrow). I figure with $3000 to put down and a good credit rating, I should be able to get a pretty sweet deal since car dealers are so desperate these days. Plus, if I get another Stang (the new orange ones are really sweet), I should get a nice customer loyalty discount since this will be my third one. But I'm not 100% certain what kind of car I'll get since I haven't even test driven anything else yet.

Job's going well, I just hope we get enough new enrollments to meet our budget. And I'm officially a chaperon for this year's grad night at Disney Studios, yes!!

That's about all that's new with me, hopefully car shopping won't be too stressful (yeah right!)

Love,

"Kay"
